Singer and Composer William George is the recipient of several ASCAPlus Awards, was Composer-In-Residence for the Erato Ensemble in Vancouver in 2006-07, and is co-founder of New Music New York and Erato Ensemble. His cantata The Virtues, commissioned and premiered by New Music New York, was nominated for a 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Music. His song cycle As Though the Word Blue Had Been Dropped Into the Water, on poetry by Northwest poet Robert Sund, was premiered by Erato Ensemble in March 2007 in Vancouver and Whistler, and was performed later in the year at the Vancouver International Song Institute. Twilight Songs, set to poetry by Wendell Berry, was premiered in April 2008 by New Music New York. Canadiana Suite, for voices and chamber ensemble, has been performed in Vancouver and New York to great acclaim. Missa Brevis was premiered at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver in 2007. 2009 saw premieres of Ave Maria Tango in Vancouver, Moon Chants in New York (as part of a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing) and The Drugs Don't Work, commissioned by Vancouver International Song Institute and Medical Conference. He is a member of ASCAP and The American Music Center. A graduate of the University of Southern California and California State University, Long Beach, his teachers included Frank Payne, James Hopkins and Justus Matthews. He has lived in Vancouver, B.C. since 2005.
